I got a wonderful story in 痛いのは嫌なので防御力に極振りしたいと思います。| BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt so I'll Max Out My Defense. (Anime)  fandom.  The show is cute, about a young girl who must have extraordinary luck being talked into playing her first MMORPG by her best friend, and the wacky hijinks that ensue.  The story feels like an episode, and Maple and Sally's relationship is front and center as the first Christmas event in the game rolls around.  Very sweet, very cute, and I enjoyed it a lot.

Meanwhile, I wrote a Hidden Legacy series story for sadlikeknives, where Arabella Baylor becomes Stephen Jiang's bodyguard.  sadlikeknives and I matched on at least 3 fandoms, and as I had just finished Emerald Blaze in the Hidden Legacy series, I had to write about my favorite snarky character in it, Arabella.  Again, I envisioned a novel that had to be cut down to a short story to meet the deadline. :)

My Late December/Early Jan got kind-of crushed by needing to do a outpatient procedure by the year end due to insurance changes -- all good, and I don't have to go back for 5 years -- and I was just pulling myself out of that funk when I got sidetracked by the coup.  So sorry to be late with announcements, and I have read hardly anything on Dreamwidth because of it.  I hope you are all doing okay.

At the beginning of the month, J and I talked about how we would do thanksgiving this year.   In the past, if we hadn't driven several hours to see our extended families, we'd get together and make a thanksgiving.  J would make the pies and the green bean casserole, while Lar and I would prep and bake the turkey in the big oven in the ADU then do the rest of the side dishes here in the main house. (A thanksgiving for six people that was too large to contain to just one house!)

We're going to do a variation on that, still using all of the ovens we have available.  We decided to do a simple thanksgiving this year, and ordered a pre-made meal from the grocery store and pies from a local bakery.  B will pick it up the day before during 'senior hours', and then the reheating will be divided between the households; he'll drop off the items we will reheat on our front porch, and then J  will deal with the rest. She's also getting the pies 'contactless delivery'  directly from the bakery to her house.

Day of, everyone reheats everything with a planned dinner time, then we take half the turkey and the reheated dishes to their place and leave it outside their door.  At the same time, we'll pick up our half the pies and reheated sides from their place. Everyone will eat in their homes -- we'll get on zoom later, and share a piece of pie and glass of wine together, the way we have done for birthdays this year.

It's not the same as all eating together, but it's as close as we are going to get this year.  I'm looking forward to it.

How it goes

I lost most of this week to the election.  I got the basics done - dishes, groceries, meals, laundry -- and I slept most nights thanks to melatonin and 'relaxing sleep sounds' before bed.  However Tuesday night was terrible, and I could not sleep that night;  I got maybe 4 hours with the stress, and anxiety dreams waking me up again and again. I spent most of Wednesday avoiding everything and read a book.  So when I woke up Thursday and things were better, I was able to work on picking my life back up again, including going to my online Tai Chi for Better Balance class on zoom.  Today I felt almost back, though I still didn't get everything I wanted to accomplish completed.  What I did was good enough.

Here's hoping that things improve a little more over the weekend.

A couple of weeks before my birthday, my husband asked what I wanted this year.

I replied that what I wanted, he couldn't give me.

"Oh?  What's that?"

"No bad news."

"How about we turn the internet off for a day instead?"

I stared at him open mouthed.  "You, sir, are a genius."

We didn't turn off the internet, but we did shut down the computers and turn the phones and kindles to airplane mode for 12 hours - 8 am to 8 pm.  The TVs stayed dark too, and we played a board game in the evening after dinner.  It was a beautiful thing, and I heartily recommend it.

Grumph!

The group Lar was working for terminated all of their contractors at the end of June, and we got maybe three business days notice that it was happening.  Our healthcare coverage ended then, but on Lar's last time contracting through this company, we got a month's grace on converting over to COBRA.  The process of ending the coverage is automated to align with the end of the contract, but they overwrote the info so we paid it out of the last check with the company.

This time due to the short notice -- along with the standard COVID stuff and the fourth of July holiday -- coverage ended on the 30th and we only found out because I renewed my prescriptions today and went to my dentist appointment.   We've being e-mailed versions of the forms we have to fill out, so we should have everything straightened out today or tomorrow.  But it also means we will most likely have to pay out of pocket for the stuff I did today, and get it all reimbursed once we can confirm that we are set up for COBRA, which should be retro to the first of the month.

it's annoying, and it makes me anxious, and that is pretty much par for the course.

Quick update - These are the books I finished over the last couple of months.  I am currently working on "The City We Became", which is definitely a thinky-think type of book.  It'll take me more time than I thought to get through it.

Fantasy/Horror
30. Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb, #1) by Muir, Tamsyn
31. Come Tumbling Down (Wayward Children Series, #5) by McGuire, Seanan
I may have already talked about these two.  I liked the mystery/quest aspects of both stories a lot.

Gay Paranormal Romance
32. Single White Incubus (Supernatural Selection #1) by Russell, E.J.
33. Vampire With Benefits (Supernatural Selection #2) by Russell, E.J.
37. The Druid Next Door (Fae Out of Water, #2) by Russell, E.J.
I like the Supernatural Selection series more than the Fae Out of Water.  I skip read a lot of Druid Next Door.

Urban Fantasy
34. Boundary Haunted (Boundary Magic, #5) by Olson, Melissa F.
I have read so many books set in this universe -- I think 3 or 4 series worth -- that they are blurring together.  Need a break before I do another one.

SF
35. Star Trek: Discovery: The Way to the Stars by McCormack, Una
16 year old Tilly runs away from boarding school.  It is what it says on the label. :)

36. The Fated Sky (Lady Astronaut, #2) by Kowal, Mary Robinette
Not quite up to the calculating stars, but still good. I'm excited for the next one too.

38. Network Effect (The Murderbot Diaries, #5) by Wells, Martha
I still love murderbot and ART. :)

Oops.

Last week, I made green french lentil picnic salad.  I love making this for warm weather days, as it's cool and tart and the whole thing sits for a day to soak up the vinaigrette that I make for it.  The trick is to get the lentils just right, so they aren't too hard or too soft after resting for that final day.

Lar and I chatted as I worked, cutting up the vegetables and both of us sorting through the green lentils to make sure it was all good after I pulled the bag from the shelf.  But something went wrong this time, and while the lentils were soft enough to be called cooked, they just weren't right.  There was a grittiness to them that I didn't remember, and it lacked the favor and punch that I expected.  "Maybe it needed more time," I muttered to myself, and I could not get past the fact that it just wasn't what I wanted.

Today, I went to the cupboard to get the bag of green peas for the split pea soup I planned to make tonight.  The only thing I found was a bag of green french lentils instead. :)

Yesterday  I went out to pull some of the dandelions on the rocky back hill, and  put on gloves and stole one of my husband's long-sleeved flannel shirts as I have issues with nettles and other prickly plants, so I am always on high alert when I do weeding. I kept hearing a rustle in the bushes.  I caught sight of some movement and noticed brown fur scampering away from me, and was all 'Rats!  Ahhhhhh!!! Rats in the rocks.  Ahhhh! '

I decided to move to a different location.

While there, I spied a small brown bunny --not a rat after all.  It passed by me, crossing our sloped yard and down to the flat meadow-like areas near the neighbor's house.

From under the trees, the neighbor's cat took an interest in it as well.  He didn't launch after it, but was obviously keeping an eye out for opportunity.

When a second small brown rabbit joined the first, I decided I was done for the day and distracted the cat with my 'happy to see you voice' while the two rabbits scampered down the drive and out to freedom.

The cat gave me a disgusted look, and headed back to his place. Naturally, I went back inside as the garden is a very busy place.

We had a goal of making it ten days without grocery shopping, and today we met that goal.  Lar will go out in the next few days, but in the meantime, I made some fabulous chickpea tikka masala:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/recipes/chickpea-tikka-masala/15989/

Lar made naan, so we bailed on making rice, and the dish did not need it.  There were some modifications: I only had 1/2 of a large onion.  Also I didn't have the tomatoes it called for , so I substituted a can of diced, fire-roasted and a can of the costco box of tomato sauce I am still working through.  I used 1 tbls dried cilantro instead of 1/2 cup fresh, but that works in a fairly sauce-y meal.  I absolutely would make this again.

Also Lar replaced the battery in my car so it works again.    The old battery died a couple of weeks ago due to inactivity, and we didn't stress about it since we weren't going anywhere anyway. There's an auto parts store at the bottom of the hill, so Lar placed the order online then drove down today to get curb side delivery.  They popped the new one into the back of Lar's truck, and took the old one for disposal.  Such an quick fix for the problem!

Hope you are doing okay.

The first of March, we decided not to go out to restaurants anymore because of the coronavirus spread in the community.  Since then, My life seems to consist of cooking, cleaning, books, and netflix, with a small amount of exercise to break up the day.  So far, the star baking items have been:

Week 1: Larry's Naan bread
Week 2: Yellow cake with Chocolate Frosting
Week 3: Tie - Berry pie and Banana bread
Week 4: Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cake with Broiled Coconut Topping
Week 5: Tie - Rosemary, Sea Salt, and Olive Oil crackers and Larry's Homemade Pizza dough (New York Style)

I still have a pre-made pie shell, so that might become either a quiche or I might do a pudding or custard based pie.  Or I could go all out and try a pot pie instead!

I haven't managed to do my book list, but I have read around 29 books so far this year -- so much more than I planned. I'm loving my library ebooks this year.  I've grouped them by interest.  No real reviews on them, but happy to discuss anything I've read. Plus my cat refuses to let me do a cut tag.

Friday we ordered take out for the first time in three weeks.  I'd seen an article interviewing the owner of the mexican restaurant at the bottom of our hill, and he talked about the rough time they are having -- they have 2 restaurants, and 5 people working on take out and delivery orders but they aren't turning a profit.  So we decided to order something last night, and Lar picked up.  We descended on the enchiladas, corn chips, and soft tacos like we were ravenous wolves or something.  Or at least cats that didn't think they'd been fed for a day.  It took us maybe 15 minutes to eat, and oh, it was so, so good.

However, it did break through a mental barrier I had: We picked up Starbucks this morning too.  We're going back to eating at home, but it was like the high from a couple of 'cheat meals' when you're on a diet.  I think that's the only way to explain how it felt.

We are in the process of rescheduling/canceling our big trip to England in June, and I am pretty sad about that but I think it's for the best.  I'm not sure what the summer or fall will bring, and planning for next year seems safe; I'm hoping that the canal boat rental company we have reservations with will make it through.

Meanwhile, we are all about the cooking! It's become a form of entertainment for us, and it's amazing the things you can make around the house.  We made a vat of an simple chicken curry in the Instant Pot, and Lar tried his hand at Naan.

The recipe I used for the curry started with this:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/simple_chicken_curry_95336

I made a vat of it though, and modified it for the instant pot.  Instant pot instructions came from this other recipe for butter chicken:
www.aspicyperspective.com/perfect-instant-pot-butter-chicken-curry/

I liked the garam masala and smoked paprika idea, so I swapped those in for some of the curry powder when I put together the instant pot. Honestly, It came out great but the big hit was my husband's Naan:

www.allrecipes.com/recipe/14565/naan/

He used the pancake griddle to make it, and it came out amazing.  Huge hit with everyone, and quite easy to do.  Highly recommend.

My house is about 5 miles from the Life Care Center of Kirkland, and J's father-in-law lived there for awhile.  My little city of Redmond had some of the first responders help with the mass evac of the facility, so we are at 3/4 staffing right now.  The mayor declared a state of emergency to get help with that, but needless to say, the city government is being incredibly cautious right now.

Such as: I usually go to Tai Chi on Thursdays - but all of the senior programs and city classes with more than 10 people were canceled as of last night. It's going to be on a week-to-week basis that they decide whether or not to close. I cannot imagine that they will reopen next week, or that I would go if they do.

Still planning on individuals coming over to the house, but we are no longer meeting friends at restaurants. I do have one final fast food outing scheduled for a friend's house, where we will pick up and eat at her place to minimize contact with workers.  Not the best, but we've got two months (more or less) of build up to go through before we get to peak; at the moment, the risk of infection is low, so one final hurrah.

Lar has been advised to work from home as much as possible; no one should go into the office.  We are going to have to figure out a place where I can put my computer as his con calls are already loud and annoying to me.    Maybe it's time to reclaim the living room from the cats, and set myself up with an office there.

Per the research I've seen, it looks that the bulk of the infection spread outside of china will hit around the early part of summer, right when we have scheduled our trip to England.  I am waiting a couple of weeks to confirm that expectation, but if it happens, we will probably cancel early so we can get something of a refund.  We aren't flying United, but given that the company is already canceling international flights into April, I think that we might not be able to get there by June anyway.  I do have trip insurance, so I could wait until something happens that actually prevents us from going and make a claim then, or I can do it this month and have everything settled.  Argh.  Decisions.

At least the taxes are done.  No refund, but nothing to pay either.  One more worry down.

Drat!  I had hoped to get a full reading list out before Escapade, but it just didn't happen. I have surprised myself in that I have already read over a dozen books this year -- including the Ancillary books, the paranormal romance type books of Melissa F. Olson, and some gay romance -- so I should get to that one of these days.   Looking forward to seeing folks there and talking about all of this in person. :)

We de-cluttered our Christmas stuff this year before returning it to our storage area under the stairs, aka the place that Harry Potter lived.  We repacked and eliminated four ancient shoeboxes and an entire plastic crate of stuff.   We kept the stockings that my mom made for us while she was alive, and donated the ones we bought for ourselves when we first got married.  The handmade ones had more feelings attached.

Fun experience, and more like DragonCon , SF-ish cons, and gaming cons I've been to than media cons. I only stayed for the day, and most of it was taken up in prep for the panel I was on (Geek Elders Speak), the panel itself, questions after, and lunch.

The one panel that I really wanted to attend was the data statistics one, which was of course scheduled at the same time as the one I was on. So that was a disappointment, but I'll find the slides and enjoy looking through the data myself.

My panel tried to cram too many people and too many different things into a single hour: pro writers and fan fictions, what early zines were like, costuming in the early days, the first conventions, early star wars fandom, etc, etc, etc. My own subject areas were slash and vidding, and I really didn't have enough time to go into details. I did a brief history of vidding as we had slides taken from 'Pressure', but you know I can do an hour on that itself. And of course everyone asks the 'why slash and not femslash' question, and it takes awhile to go through my opinion on how that came to be, along with discussion of the way slash fandom started out as simply 'The Premise', and grew to what it is today.

Mostly I wanted a lot more time. Not for my other panelists, of course. I wanted that time for me. :)

I also need to refresh my femslash history, as I got a couple of questions on that. I mentioned that I heard of some in Star Trek, and thought that Blake's 7 had some femslash stories early on, only to be met with a 'Blake's 7? I've never heard of that. I guess I should research it' type of response.

History outreach, man. We gotta do more outreach.

It was fun, but as I said, I needed more time. It did make me excited for Escapade.

If you are interested in being a part of the Geek Elders Speak anthology about the influence of women in fandom from 1950-1985, you can connect with Jenni (one of my co-panelists) for details here:

I finished up several books over the last couple of months, in part because I finally retired and we took a long train trip to the Grand Canyon, (which was amazing!) I think I', going to have to break the books into two groupings, as I read a lot more than I expected.

#21: Storm of Locusts (The Sixth World #2) by Rebecca Roanhorse
I enjoyed this book but didn't love it as much as I did the first one, which I have to admit is a pattern with me. Probably due to the way the universe is widened out to encompass more post-apocalypse societies, while the main relationship and main culture from the prior book stayed in the background. Still a good action plot and good characters and world building, but in expanding the world, I missed seeing more about relationship fallout from book one.

#22: Sapphire Flames (Hidden Legacy #4) by Ilona Andrews
Sapphire Flames is interesting because it shifts the series protagonist to the second of a set a sisters, rather than either of the main characters for the first set of these novels. Still a romance, with a young protagonist and her more experienced love interest, and still very light in tone despite the body count. Interesting contrast to storm of locusts, as this book doesn't try to widen the universe really, just dig in to more detail about the way the world works. Still Houston, still genetic magic, same family trying to make ends meet, but very different problems. Also I have a completely made up slash pairing in this universe, and I got a whole arm touch between the two of them, which made me happy.

#23: Hounded (The Iron Druid Chronicles #1) by Kevin Hearne

Wow. Yeah. This was recommended to me as 'like the Dresden novels', and while I can see the same types of patterns in it that match up between the two series, this one doesn't even bother with terrible relationship building and even try to do anything with the female characters, other than strip them and have sex with them right away. Plus I really want a better term for 'authorial wish fulfillment/fantasy so strong that it lights up every chapter in the book and makes me uncomfortable', but I don't have one. Just...No.

As that catches me up to where I was before my train trip started, I'll stop there.  I still have so many books to read!
