Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kadymae who gave us the song and the fandom, which let us do something completely different for our normal style: fast and intense, flipping in and out of timelines though referential clips, pulling out all the stops. The vid challenged us, and in the we ended up with something that we're quite proud of. Thanks, KadyMae, for choosing us to make this vid. We had a blast.

The vid is up on our BAM site, though you'll had to set up a login to view it, and it's embedded under the cut. Hopefully, I've done the embedding right, otherwise it is at the above link on BAM here )

We started this vid back before Sandy started chemo and I started cycling; even though it's a very short vid, neither of us had the energy to finish it at the time. Huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] killabeez who remastered all of these HL vids. I am so sorry that I forgot to post this one for so long. Us was made by the MC HL collective, [livejournal.com profile] feochadn, [livejournal.com profile] gattagrigia, [livejournal.com profile] sherrold and I, back in '98/'99. Part of the reason for us making this vid was that by using a Duncan perspective, we had the whole history of Highlander to choose from, rather than being limited to just the Methos eps (which by this point in time, were becoming significantly over-used. All the big money shots were losing their emotional appeal except to the hardcore HL fan.) So it's a Duncan/Methos vid with very little Methos in it, yet is says a whole heck of a lot about their relationship.

This vid will soon be up on our imeem account if you want to stream it. ETA: Or not. Still hasn't come through yet, and it's been many hours. I will look for another alternative for streaming.

[livejournal.com profile] sherrold's birthday is next week, but many of us will be in the pre-con frenzy for Vividcon. So [livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r created a surprise for Sandy, and remastered the Due South vid Roll to Me, which Sandy and [livejournal.com profile] gattagrigia made lo these many moons ago. It's a lovely vid, full of Fraser/Vecchio goodness, that makes my little slasher's heart gleeful with delight. [livejournal.com profile] killabeez said something like:

You know what would be cool? The vid version of the 5 stories meme. So, with that thought, here are 5 favorite vids that I have done. I'm not going to say that these are the best or always my favorites, but for the moment, these are the ones

1. Lives in the Balance, Wiseguy, Character Study for Roger Lococo,on our vid site
I've always loved Roger, and I assume most people know the backstory on this vid. It was the first one I ever picked the song for and had the vision for. [livejournal.com profile] sherrold did all of the button-pushing as it was first made during the 2-VCR era, while I was on bed rest with pregnancy-induced blood pressure problems. It was a great way to keep me entertained.

The version on our vid site was re-cut from the DVDs last year. I'm hoping to post it up on Imeem later today.

2. Hair, Multimedia, bouncy fun con vid, not available on-line
Unfortunately, this vid will probably never be available on-line as it has just too much source to track down. We scoured fandom for a year pulling all of the source together, asking people to bring tapes with them when they came up to Seattle to stay. My favorite two clips in it are the slow hair flip with Armond, and the slow one with Castillo pushing his dripping wet hair out of his face as he stands in the water. I love the way those two moments are so slow in contrast to the rest of the vid that it just re-frames the whole thing. They are perfect hair-fan moments.

3. He's the Man, The Sentinel, Character Study for Jim, not available on-line
I was at [livejournal.com profile] sherrold's office to take her to lunch one day, and she said, "you have to listen to this." Then she played the comedy bit, and when it was over, I blinked and said "you know, that would make a great vid." We dragged Jo into it, and did shuttle vidding; I don't think the three of us were ever in the same room at the same time while we worked on this vid. I loved how we were able to show Jim's two sides, the action-hero and the girly-man. I have such a fondness for that particular combination.

Have I mentioned how much I love contrasts? I'd say Bodie, Jim, and John Sheppard are all in the "psychokiller or pretty, pretty princess" vein.

4. Voodoo, Invisible Man, Character study/relationship study about obsession, grainy imeem streaming version or on our vid site Originally, Sandy and I had a completely different vid plotted out, but we laid the first clip down--an eye image--then looked at each other and went "okay, cool. We are going someplace else." I loved the way the obsession between the two men and the way that quicksilver connects them

5. Stress, Stargate Atlantis, Character study for Rodney McKay, grainy imeem streaming version or on our vid site
I originally wanted to use this song for Buffy, but it never really fit. I guess that's because it was waiting around for Rodney to arrive, as the song is the perfect fit for him.

Honorable Mentions:

Hippie Boy, The Sentinel, character study for Blair, not available on-line.
This one is really Jo's brainchild, as she had the song, but I got to work on it and learned so much in the doing. Jo has a great eye for camera details. We had to work for it as Blair's visual angst generally ranged from somewhat bemused to pretty darn bummed.

Wipeout, SG-1/Farscape Parallels,on our vid site
Ha! We did this before Cameron and Valla showed up on SG-1, and knowing that I did that fills me with unholy glee. Essentially, I made a vid that pulled the Farscape characters into the SG-1 universe, and then TPTB did that FOR REALS. Is that not awesome or what?

Same Thing in Reserve, The Sentinel, constructed reality, not available on-line.
We had a lot of fun building the universe where Blair and Jim were outed, plus we got to use Katherine's really cool fader to do the transitions! This was a pre-digital vid, made with 2 VCRs and we needed a whole 'nother machine to do the crossfades that just take a widget in premier anymore. (Hey you kids, out of my begonias!)

Okay, writing this up was a lot of fun. Thanks for tagging me, Killa!

We had a lot of fun making this vid, but a huge amount of problems outputting it. We need to thank both [livejournal.com profile] killabeez and [livejournal.com profile] z_rayne for their help. wickedwords: (vid tv by sherrold)
[livejournal.com profile] melina123 is the person who originally brought this up, and it made sense to me, so I'm gonna put out a half-baked version of the concept so it can be discussed and refined a bit. Several years ago, the Highlander Media Cannibals created a vid to "Hear that Voice Again." It was a pretty complicated vid, attempting to show how guilt and Duncan's past history and insecurities have fucked up his life. The first person we showed it to, who was a Methos fan without any real interest in Duncan, was very confused by it. "What is this, a graduate exam?"

At that point, all the energy went out of us. If you didn't have a strong background in the character and his history, you couldn't get the vid. It was a confusion of images and sounds that just didn't make sense. The vid seemed to work fine for those who knew Duncan's history and his character, but as that was only about a third of the Highlander slashers at the time, it was a little disheartening. It meant that the audience for the vid would never be that big, as it required too much detailed knowledge of characters and canon to be truly accessible.

So, when Melina made a statement about how [livejournal.com profile] sherrold's and my Smallville vid "So Damn Hot" was at her 'reading level' in the fandom, it made a ton of sense to me. You don't have to know a lot about the fandom to access the vid, but you have to know some to get the biggest joke.

And that seemed to be about the level of most of the Escapade audience: a passing familiarity with a lot of fandoms, but wide-spread, detailed knowledge of only a few. Graduate level vids are gonna be a hard sell in that environment, for more than a handful of fans with the specialized education required, and if there's a mismatch between what a first grade/literal interpretation of a scene would be in comparison to a graduate level/metaphorical interpretation -- well, the audience is likely to react to it en masse at grade level one. I think that graduate level vids can and should be shown at cons, but if you want to prevent misunderstood viewings, they should be reviewed by a fan who is somewhat unfamiliar with the fandom prior to the showing to make sure that there's no grade one level joke or perception that would interfere with the more "educated" reading.

An example of this: we used the occasional shot of fire or heat vision on some of our lyric lines, so the grade one read has the audience going "Oh! Fire. Hot. I get it." If you're saying anything more complicated along with that, it may be completely missed. The literal interpretation is the grade one interpretation, and if there is nothing else that the grade one reader can tie into, then they will spend the whole vid reacting to that.

For us, it worked great. For someone else trying to say something complex about the fandom or the relationship or character, it might not.

So beware the cheese.
