I decided that I'd just stick with the names and accounts that I already have, so I am wickedwords.dreamwidth.org. Please let me know your name there, as well as any cool and nifty things you've learned. My plan is still to crosspost to LJ, as I have a perm account here, but I'm excited by the thought of a new community space.

Go here: http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=65 and do some digging. Those are all the DW related comms and there's cool stuff.

The biggest thing to remember is that it *is* still in beta. Stuff will break from time to time. Or something way cool will be there and gone as they toss it out to test and then pull it back to fix.

And don't forget the FAQs. They're still incomplete, but I've seen one of my questions show up as one. Having managed an FAQ system, myself, I gotta tell you, one of the best ways to populate it is by taking actual user questions and using them.

Can I ask what the hubub is about? Is this better than LJ? I know people were talking about insanejournal a while ago then that died down.

It's the thought of going to a fan-influenced space. Some of the people that created dreamwidth are fans that used to work for livejournal, so they have experience with the technical side of a social network site, and intimate knowledge of what fans are looking for in such a site. For example, I can subscribe to read someone else's journal, and I can grant them access to my 'locked' posts, but those are two separate permission sets. I'm not tied to 'friending' people back or having to filter and screen them from my reading list if I choose to to keep most of my posts under wraps while keeping my reading list small. I haven't played with it a lot yet, but I think the separation is cool, and more in line with how we want to use the software, rather than how LJ is structure.

So more thought about how fans work has gone into design of the system than is typical in an LJ clone, and I want to see how it works.

Oh, man. I am really bad at this. I haunted my friends until I got lucky and someone gave me one. I believe there's a community where you can sign up for them over on dreamwidth too.

The codes are just until the 30th, as far as I know, for the closed beta.
