How miffed should I get? How lazy am I?
Nov. 25th, 2008 11:45 amLike many other people, I've had a story archived without my permission on
tehopheliac's site: http://www.amortentia.net/
ETA: The site has been taken down now, so it's being dealt with.
It's my lone Rodeny/Radek story and it's the Stargate Atlantis crackfic section; honestly, the thing that bothers me most about it is that it's in the crackfic section. I mean...it's a H/c story. One that was supposed to be canon-based, and feel like an episode, but yet, it's filed under crackfic.::sigh::
And nothing else I wrote was good enough to take and re-archive. Just, you know, my one-shot crackfic. I swear, some days I feel I get little writing respect.
Still, it's a rec list of her favorite stories, which is technically nice. She just implemented it in that confused way people have of not understanding the difference between linking and taking; I totally empathize with her desire not to lose the story, and to make it available to other people, when so many stories have gone missing in the past. But at the same time, taking someone else's story like that and reposting it isn't nice.
So I am torn. Do I bother to write her and ask it to be taken down? Do I then upload it to An Archive of Our Own, so it can have a perm link, and send that to her as well? Do I say 'I have had an internet archive since 1997, and the address has only changed once, so feel free to link there?' And then give her the link for my site?
Or do I even bother with it at all?

Date: 2008-11-25 08:16 pm (UTC)as to the archive question, i think that if you are miffed, it's perfectly okay to ask her to rearchive it or take it down. and definitely put it up on AAOOO, because, yay!

Date: 2008-11-25 09:28 pm (UTC)And I will right her and ask her to take down her copy, replacing it with a link either to the copy on my website or one of the other places I'm archiving it, rather than keep a copy herself. I'll feel like I have some control then, no matter what happens, rather than feeling so helpless.

Date: 2008-11-25 09:24 pm (UTC)Linking is one thing but uploading the entire story...
As an archivist though I don't link to stories of author's who change website addresses like I change my socks. Dead links suck.

Date: 2008-11-26 12:21 am (UTC)And I agree, hosting other people's work without permission is a very big bucket of not cool. Also her excuses were kind of thin. If she wanted to have a backup she could have just zipped up her fic downloading folder and uploaded that to her domain? it's what I do to make sure I have an online backup of all the stories I read. that and burn to dvd, keep on a flashdrive, and on 3 separate computers. I'm only a little paranoid about losing the fan fics I've saved. :)

Date: 2008-11-25 09:47 pm (UTC)But mostly I am commenting to say, if it helps (and it may not) that it's not under crackFIC but under crackPAIRING. Which is entirely subjective no matter how you spin it. (Hm, for a minute I thought she was using "crack" as a synonym for "misc" but she's getting quite a collection of McKay/Zelenka there, so maybe it's just not a pairing she thought she'd like? Who knows.)
