Like many other people, I've had a story archived without my permission on [livejournal.com profile] tehopheliac's site: http://www.amortentia.net/

ETA: The site has been taken down now, so it's being dealt with.

It's my lone Rodeny/Radek story and it's the Stargate Atlantis crackfic section; honestly, the thing that bothers me most about it is that it's in the crackfic section. I mean...it's a H/c story. One that was supposed to be canon-based, and feel like an episode, but yet, it's filed under crackfic.::sigh::

And nothing else I wrote was good enough to take and re-archive. Just, you know, my one-shot crackfic. I swear, some days I feel I get little writing respect.

Still, it's a rec list of her favorite stories, which is technically nice. She just implemented it in that confused way people have of not understanding the difference between linking and taking; I totally empathize with her desire not to lose the story, and to make it available to other people, when so many stories have gone missing in the past. But at the same time, taking someone else's story like that and reposting it isn't nice.

So I am torn. Do I bother to write her and ask it to be taken down? Do I then upload it to An Archive of Our Own, so it can have a perm link, and send that to her as well? Do I say 'I have had an internet archive since 1997, and the address has only changed once, so feel free to link there?' And then give her the link for my site?

Or do I even bother with it at all?

Tell her to take it down - don't let her get away with that. She'll only take lack of objection as approval.

unrelated to the archive question, i LOVED that story so much, i don't think i ever got over being shy to tell you so but eee, i love your writing anyway and that story is so very much in character for me and so... feeling. aiee, i feel like an idiot but thank you for sharing it.

as to the archive question, i think that if you are miffed, it's perfectly okay to ask her to rearchive it or take it down. and definitely put it up on AAOOO, because, yay!

Tell her to take it down. She had no right to put it up without your agreement. Archive it where you want. You don't have to send her the URL; she can do her own searching.

I would write to her, thank her for the rec and tell her that you appreciate how much she likes the story, and ask her to take it down. You could upload it to the AaoO and give her that link (since that's pretty much guaranteed to be a persistent permanent link), or you could give her the link to your own site, since your website is pretty stable too.

I'd do the last thing. Tell her that you're honoured/flattered/etc. that she wanted your story for her site, but that she really should have asked you first. Please take it down and use this link. And it's not crackfic just because Rodney's with Radek. Sheesh.

Now I'm wondering if any of my stuff is there. Hmmmm.

Well, I totally vote for uploading it to the AOOO either way. :D

Huh, I'm there, too. And, like you, I have a personal archive which is stable. I am slightly miffed, I must say - it would've been nice to be asked.

Consensus seems to be that yes, it is worth asking her to take it down. So I think I will do that, and then also upload it to AOOO. Thanks.

You should definitely let her know. I made the same mistake when I made my first archive in 96/97 and I didn't know better until someone let me know it's considered rude to archive without permission. I think going the nice route isn't a bad idea just in case she really doesn't know better.

Linking is one thing but uploading the entire story...

As an archivist though I don't link to stories of author's who change website addresses like I change my socks. Dead links suck.

Oh, yay! I worked my butt off on that story, so it is great to hear that you liked it. Thanks.

And I will right her and ask her to take down her copy, replacing it with a link either to the copy on my website or one of the other places I'm archiving it, rather than keep a copy herself. I'll feel like I have some control then, no matter what happens, rather than feeling so helpless.

I agree with everyone else about graciously inviting her to take down her version and link to a permanent home.

But mostly I am commenting to say, if it helps (and it may not) that it's not under crackFIC but under crackPAIRING. Which is entirely subjective no matter how you spin it. (Hm, for a minute I thought she was using "crack" as a synonym for "misc" but she's getting quite a collection of McKay/Zelenka there, so maybe it's just not a pairing she thought she'd like? Who knows.)

That is because it is a good consensus! (For more reasons than that I happen to agree with the consensus.)

Thanks for the tip - I'm going to post about this, because she's got a lot of HP stuff up there by authors I know. WHY SO STUPID, INTERWEBS?

Actually, that does make me feel a lot better. Crack pairing could easily mean 'a relationship I didn't think I'd like, but I'd did.' thanks.

I'm definitely going to tell her to take it down. It'll make me feel better, even if she doesn't comply.

You're right, and it looks like she's changing her email alias as well, since she's been flooded with email. Okay then.

Dead links do suck. When them moved the TPM archive it killed my rec page and any desire I had to maintain them, so I empathize, but still, taking and publicly hosting someone else's fiction without asking isn't right. She has taken down the site though, so I guess it's a done deal at this point.

I'm thinking I will. I ran into a problem with my pseud for the first story I uploaded--I couldn't get it to take just the pseud, it had to assign the account name as well--so I haven't uploaded anything else. But I really should try again. That might have just been a hiccup in the old version.

oh, boy I hate it when archives go down. My rec lists also get completely messed up. However, lately I've been having more issues with author's flocking their previously publically posted stories.

And I agree, hosting other people's work without permission is a very big bucket of not cool. Also her excuses were kind of thin. If she wanted to have a backup she could have just zipped up her fic downloading folder and uploaded that to her domain? it's what I do to make sure I have an online backup of all the stories I read. that and burn to dvd, keep on a flashdrive, and on 3 separate computers. I'm only a little paranoid about losing the fan fics I've saved. :)

She's taken the site down, so that looks like a done deal, which is a relief. And it looks like I read the category wrong--crack pairing instead of crackfic--which makes me feel better, as Rodney/Radek isn't the dominant slash pairing in the fandom; it's a rare pair, and I guess for some, that makes it crack.

The whole thing was really weird.

She's taken her site down, so at this point, it's sort of moot. I am thinking that I need to put my stuff up on AAoOO, but man, there is just a lot of it. And I am inherently lazy, so I don't know when I will get to it all.
