Sandy always wanted a fannish wake
Jul. 31st, 2011 07:31 pmMany years ago, Shoshanna bought a round of mimosa's for everyone at Escapade as part of a celebration. That really impressed Sandy, and for years after, she mentioned wanting to include the fannish community in her life like that--and for Sandy, that usually was conceived of as a wake when she passed. In the 1990s, she made me promise that after she was gone, I would contact the concom of the nearest slash convention, and help organize a celebration of fannish life, organize her wake.
Worlds change, and Vividcon is the closest con to her passing. I've contacted the con com, and asked if we could set aside some space for a couple of hours to sing and talk or just have some quiet time to reflect on what she meant to us all. I know they were already working on a tribute vid show, and with Club Vivid and Karoke and Fannish History and, well, everything, I figure the whole place is going to be filled with memories of her and joy at what she added to our fannish conversation. There is food and drink and dancing and fans parting and talking and a House o'Meat, all ready made for us all; it's already a celebration, so I don't feel like I have to really have to add a thing. Please bring pictures if you have them, or if there's a story or something you'd like to contribute. I think we'd all like to share, and we'll figure something out.
In addition to Vividcon, I think we're going to do something at Escapade. Sandy and I went to that con starting in year 2, and we would have made year one if it hadn't been 4 months after the con where we first heard about it. That's another place to share with fellow fans and celebrate her life. Maybe we can find some of the old filks, since Sandy loved to sing.
