Healing Station Argh. by [livejournal.com profile] toft_froggy
Hit my embarassment squick with the force of a thousand drones. Could not back out of this story fast enough. Those of you who got through it? Wow, you are better women than I.

Deeply, deeply in love with this and still trying to get my head out of JD-Jack O'Neill space. Long, plotty, with incredible detail and great characterization. Jack was my favorite SG-1 character, and seeing him through the eyes of his clone JD is fascinating, and I loved watching how JD put a life together after walking away from the life the SGC had given him. Plus it has Cam, and I adore Cam; watching him deal with not bouncing completely back after the crash made my heart ache at times. I forgive him for having the most supportive family ever, because he so fucking needed it. So it's no wonder that having JD and Cam in a relationship really worked for me, and then we get to the action plot...

I really recommend this even if you're a slow reader like me. It'll take a while to get through, but the universe and game playing is so worth it.

A Clear and Different Light by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper and [livejournal.com profile] naye
This was the first of the SGA Big Bang stories, and I absolutely adored it. It's clever and fun, completely cracked out, yet the character emotions ring true. Plus once you get beyond the initial set-up--Rodney's been raised by whales, John is a black ops mage, Teyla's a rune mage, while Ronon a winged warrior--the authors do an excellent job of making the whole story incredibly creepy--the wraith act a bit like the goa'uld of SG-1, slipping inside of people and possessing them, but with the wraith, it goes even beyond death. ::shiver:: It's team!fic, with a side of gentle John/Rodney slash, and fab world building. Just awesome.

Hee! I just posted about how much I loved Healing Station Aargh! I doubt I am a better woman than you, though.

That's really interesting to hear about Toft's story. I expected it to hit my embarrassment squick hard and it sort of edged around it early, but then eased off and I was ok and ended up really liking the story.

I think though that it's one of those stories that would have hit me really hard if I didn't know/trust the author. I was able to talk my way through the stuff at the very beginning by reminding myself that none of the really bad/humiliating places it could so easily go were places Toft actually would take it.

I'm not sure why it hit me so hard. I think it was the ronon as former soap opera star that just squicked me out. From the comments on my flist, I'm thinking that it may also be the thing that stops me from completely embracing RPS, though I do read it occasionally.

Despite being burned too many times by stories with what amounts to "everybody does everybody else!" in the pairings section, I usually like Toft's work, and tried to plough through Healing Station. I think I made it down the equivalent a couple of pages. I'm just . . . I could not get into the story at all, nor enjoy the premise.

Thank god! Someone else with a similar reaction. I tried reading it, but it really did not hit my kinks enough to make it past my embarrassment squick.

I just read Broken Wings while I was in Minnesota and loved it for a lot of the same reasons. If you haven't read A Howling in the Factory Yard with JD undercover, I'd also rec that.

I have read it all now, and would madly, passionately love more. My head is still caught up in that AU, and I'd love to see the long(ish) follow-up to what happens when JD comes home.

Huh -- I loved Healing Station Aargh! I assume you meant John was embarrassed, and yeah, I guess he was briefly, but no one rubbed his nose in it, and it got better.

A reminder that our squicks are similar, not identical, I guess [g].

Oh, it wasn't John that bugged me; I was freaked at Ronon being a soap opera star, and trying to hide from his public. That's where I got squicked, and I was just hypothesizing that maybe it's the same thing that keeps me from embracing RPS fully. I can dabble in it, but every now and then, I hit something that just freaks me the heck out.
