I'd love to sign up for someone to do commentaries on my work, but I have a backlog of about 6 stories that aren't on my website. I suppose I could sign up without updating, but that seems so wrong, as not all my fiction would be in a single location.

Honestly, after 10 years of website maintenance, at this point I am almost ready to take the whole thing down, except for the fact that my ego won't let me. Do people still read off of websites anymore?

ETA: LOL! Looks like I will be updating my site this weekend. Actually, it's quite encouraging to see that people still use the websites.

My two cents, I like personal websites. One look at the lay out and I can gauge what sort of writing I'm going to find (that's facile, but generally true), plus it lets me see the story exactly the way the writer wants it, from margins to font to art to any extras they think are relevant. Finally, if they write in more than one fandom, I can find all of their stuff in one place. Maybe when OTW gets their archive going it will offer that last one, it won't weigh so heavily.

Please do keep your website! I'm actually a little sad that we're so heavily reliant on LJ now for archiving purposes. That, and reading fics off websites feels more personal. Admittedly though, I'll be more shy about sending feedback via email, but that's another issue entirely...

I don't know how much people use websites for their primary reading, but I mourn their slow decline as permanent archives. LiveJournal is great for keeping up with things, but as an archival medium, frankly, it sucks . . . it's far too easy for a fiction journal to get deleted or locked at whim, for one thing. I'm all for authors having control over their fic, but making it all vanish ought -- in my opinion -- to be something that takes more thought and effort than just flipping a couple of bits.

(Maybe this has something to do with the fact that I'm a medievalist by training, which means spending a lot of time coming up against the problem of lost or partial texts and unique copies. So my mind kind of hurts when I think about somebody doing something like that deliberately.)

I know you don't want to hear this but YES people still do read off websites. I find myself stranded on dial-up for a handful of months at the moment and website hosted (as opposed to LJ or even E-Fiction) fic is a godsend!

Sorry *g*

I still hate reading off LJ, after all these years. Websites make it so easy!

Oh yes. No other way to read long stories. Or see all of an authors' work in one place.

Oh, yeah, I still prefer to read fic on a website where possible, Rache. {{hugs}} It is a pain to post in multiple places, though, isn't it?

one solution I've seen to this is writers who post a link to their web page in their lj instead of also posting to lj. :::shrug::: I'm with you on the rather read on a web page though. And for printing out to read off line, which I do a lot of, it's a definite plus for me to have access to a completed story on the web.

Yeah, if it's short I'll post both places. If it's long, I just link to the web page. I have found I get more feedback if I include an LJ feedback link, however.

I'm new to fandom, having only been reading fic since Yuletide 2006, but prefer reading on websites. When the author has a website, I bookmark that version of the fic rather than the LJ one, even though it confuses me when dealing with other people's del.icio.us accounts.

I prefer websites for reading, but realize that maintaining them can be a time consuming process.

I do check your site several times a year, though I do read your work as it is posted to LJ also.

oh, good! So glad you'll be updating. It's the enormous pleasure that other fen's personal sites give me that nudge me into maintaining my own.
