2007 Bike Ride #5: Juanita 3 Hill Loop
Mar. 4th, 2007 03:00 pmRide Length: 30 miles (more or less)
Where: 520 bike path to Lake Washington Dr in Kirkland, over Market hill to Juanita beach, and over Finn Hill to Kenmore before hooking up with Lake Samm Trail for the last 11-12 miles.
Start Time: 10:00 am (ish)
How long: 3.40 by watch
Heart Rate: 139 avg, 165 peak
Total Calories: 4000
I planned on doing this ride last year, but I wasn't in good enough shape. This time, I pushed myself but I rode up *all* the hills (520, Market, Finn). I did get a bug in my mouth (or something, anyway) right at the top of Finn Hill, near Big Finn Park; I stopped there and rinsed my mouth out, then decided I'd go ahead and have another snack. Since, you know, I was already stopped and all.
From Juanita Beach up Finn Hill is one long climb. The grade's not steep, but it is constant; that hill alone is 450 feet. I'm guessing I climbed somewhere around 1000 feet, combining the elevations on all 3 hills. My toes ended up getting a little numb, and I'm not sure if that was cold or shoes; it's was low 40s when I started riding, and I think it just hit 50s when I ended. I may need to investigate actual biking shoes--right now, I just use my normal Nikes and maybe that's not the best thing for the long haul. Or maybe I just need to wear 2 pairs of socks when it's cold, like you do hiking.
I'm thinking about doing the 70-mile Tour de Cure for diabetes in May. It's about double the longest distance I've done, and it would be on-schedule for the RSVP if I wanted to do that as well. But there's this whole 'fund raising' thing that I'm a little squeamish about, so I don't know. Maybe I should go to the kick off in a couple of weeks to see what it's like.
ETA: And if you want to see the route, I listed it on bikely Here
