We were going to do the full Chilly Hilly route, which is 33 miles, but man, I think I must not be recovered from the STP yet as it was such a hard slog up the steeper hills; I ended up walking some as I just didn't want to keep pushing up the hill on the bike. The rolling hills are great fun, if you can catch enough of a downhill right before it to push you most of the way up the next, but the steep ones make my heart rate climb into the 'okay, need to rest a bit' zone.

At one point, my heart monitor freaked out, and suddenly jumped to 240, then back down to the 140s. I never did get the real 'highest heart rate' to register for that reason. I know I saw it hit the 155-158 mark on Pederson Hill, and really, considering I'm on beta blockers, that was quite enough of that.

I only lost my chain once, which was good, considering the number of hills we had to climb. I also had 'I am more tired that I thought' moment, when I swung my leg over my bike to climb into the saddle--and ended up sitting on my bike pack, just behind the seat. Hey, at least I made the woman walking toward the rest rooms and saw me do it laugh.

It was a great day for the ride. I ended up trapped behind a train and barely made it to the ferry in time; we were the last people loaded on before it took off across the water. Beautiful views and a light breeze made the crossing an easy one, and then we took off uphill after all the cars had been unloaded. [livejournal.com profile] sherrold had lived on the island for several years, so she kept pointing out places like where the 'pony club' had been, and the rock on the beach that was so tall when she was six. I really loved the personal tour along with the great views. In addition to the beach, Bainbridge has a lot of forest area, so we got to see a bunny and baby squirrel along the ride. B had some real excitement when a deer jumped out of the brush and landed on the road in front of her, and then jumped into the brush on the opposite side; we were too far ahead to see it happen, but I am amazed that she didn't fall. I think I would have if a deer jumped in front of me like that.

We decided to cut the ride short, and had to make our way across the island to catch the ferry back. I was getting very tired of hills by then, so when we finally saw a road that headed into civilization, we took it. Eventually, we made it to the dock, and the 1:10 ferry was running a little late; we ended up being in the first group onto the ferry this time, rather than the last. I treated myself to a cold bottle of water and a bag of potato chips on this crossing, and I swear, they were the best chips I had ever had. Despite the sports drink and clif shot bloks I had been downing, my body must have been craving more salt.
