Day 01

In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges?

I'm doing the challenge this year because I like the structure of a daily challenge, and I want to be more an active participant in fandom.  With the stress of the past year (Moving Dad to assisted care, his being hospitalized three times, the issues with work, and building the ADU) I am feeling fragile.  Fandom can be my happy place if I work at it, so I'm hoping that this set of challenges will help me do that!

Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fusion, Ensemble Cast, Magical Affairs, Misses Clause Challenge, Comedy
Summary:

Amy Santiago is under investigation by Magical Affairs.

I wrote crackfic for yuletide! This was so much fun. Strix alba requested a Harry Potter/B99 crossover, 'or as much as you can do for yuletide', and that was my cue to make this a walk on the silly side. I'd also been reading some of the spoilers for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, so I had some fresh ideas of how the magical culture might be different in America. I ran with it all, and tried to frame up the B99 crew as if they had magical powers. It's short - just long enough to get in, do the joke, and move on. :)

Gravity is a Harsh Mistress (2996 words) by Rachael Sabotini
For Dira Sudis (dsudis)
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Martian (2015), The Martian - Andy Weir
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Relationships: Chris Beck/Beth Johanssen/Mark Watney
Characters: Beth Johanssen, Chris Beck, Mark Watney
Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Bathing/Washing, Team as Family
Summary: Mark didn't come away from Mars completely unscathed.

When I saw the pinch hit come through for H/c the Martian - with one request per the book and one per the movie -- I jumped at it. Because...H/C! Science Fiction! Potential Threesome! So totally in my wheelhouse, I had to jump at it.

Of course, once I got it, I had a rush of anxiety over writing. There was the little matter of my writing speed being glacier-like, and having less than a week to write it in -- given that I would be out of town on deadline weekend. It was at that point that I recognized the requester, and started banging my head on the desk for not really looking at that first.

So I grabbed a couple of people off the yuletide beta readers list -- alina and Celeste -- just to make sure I was writing something intelligible. Then I asked Gwyn to beta it, as I knew she could whip the story into shape, and find all the missing emotional holes that I initially forget. I worked on it right up until deadline, and am pretty proud of how it turned out.

Dira liked it, and I felt good about my writing process. It was a good Yuletide for me.

Day 2

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

Sure!  Why not.

1) My icons are aging, just like their owner. :)  I would love an icon with Miss Fisher looking fabulous, ladies wearing menswear, something in the JediStormPilot line, or people reading.  (I love icons with books in them.)  Freshen it up as it were.

2) What is the most recent fanfic story under 20K words that you'd recommend?

3) What is your favorite non-fiction book at the moment?  I enjoyed both Flash Boys and the Big Short last year, so I am looking for something with a solid narrative thread, but I'm thinking about branching out from financial disasters.  Other disasters might be good for me too. :)
