So in my son's history of rock and roll class, they are doing a unit on the Talking Heads, and while "Once in a Lifetime" is the song he is supposed to be writing a paragraph on, he was having a hard time with emotionally connecting to it.

This cannot be! says I. So we discuss the song and I provide him with the analogy of how he feels when he is playing his videogame and looks up to suddenly realize that *gasp* he's somewhere completely different from where he thought he was.

That seemed to be the key, and he was able to write the paragraph. After, I made him watch Lifetime Piling Up, which he really loved. "I didn't understand the song, mom, but all of the Rodneys matched."

...this is not my beautiful house...

This calls for my Talking Heads icon.

I always feel like Once in a Lifetime is the soundtrack of my life...

Awww.

And now I have to watch that vid again. (It's a rough life.)

The Talking Heads are the house-band of Atlantis. I can't help it! It's just TRUE. I've had to physically STOP MYSELF from vidding Once In A Lifetime, Cities, and Home. *pushes TH albums away, shivering like a junkie.*

Damn, why can't I take that class? Or teach it, for that matter.

(The live version of that song, off "Stop Making Sense"? Gives me CHILLS every damn time.)

I have a friend who teaches a unit in freshman comp on "succinct writing via song lyrics." Her favorites are TH and Bruce Springsteen.

If I had any vidding talent I'd do "Road to Nowhere."

Clearly a song about SGA's writers. *g*

Why did they not teach subjects like this when I was in school?

*pouts*

I haven't got past the sheer joy of a history of rock and roll class!

Are you mocking the earnest efforts of Mallozzi and co. at maintaining continuity? I am shocked, I tell you. SHOCKED.

They are! Ev has come home humming or singing bits of their songs these past couple of weeks, and every time, I think "oooh. you could do something with that."

Ev loves it. He hates that it's a writing class, but loves the class itself.

(Man, yes. I know what you mean.)

Ohh, that sounds like a good class too. And RTN would make a great vid.

I didn't get them either. Ev's school, though, man. He gets the good classes.

Ev's school is awesome, and they tailor the required coursework to what the kids are interested in. He's taking medieval history, art around the world, and the history of rock and roll this semester in addition to math and the regular stuff. Sounds like fun to me.
