Fandom Appreciation Challenge, day 2
Jul. 28th, 2008 09:33 pmToday's Fandom Appreciation Challenge is to "rec 3 stories that must be at least 6 months old." Well, I'm a big believer in the longevity of good stories, and really rotten at posting feedback, so my main problem was being spoiled for choice. All of these have great world building, interesting plots, and very different interpretations of John Sheppard.

This story was a part of the Surfacing zine, and it is a lovely retelling of the Snow Queen, one of my favorite fairy tales. In this case, the Snow Queen is Atlantis, and John the boy who falls under her spell--only not. It's got a great slow reveal and I really loved watching Rodney put the pieces together; it's got a fabulous plot.

Yes, I know. John Sheppard/Daniel Jackson is not a natural pairing, but man, does Frostfire make it work. The story is gut-wrenching, with the Wraith making it to Earth, and the two men try to do what they can to do more than just survive. It's grim and brutal--it's apocafic after all--and their relationship grows out of their desperation. It's an angst-lovers dream.

Okay, this one is for fun. It's light and brisk, and it never stops moving. The dialog is fantastic, the banter snaps along, and I had several laugh out loud moments. Rodney is playing strip poker with Sam when Jack busts in on the game, and Rodney panics, thinking Jack is out to kill him. So he hires a guy off craigslist to protect him from Jack, only...John Sheppard isn't exactly what Rodney expected him to be. A complete romp.
