Last year, when I did the first half of this ride, I really pushed myself to finish. This time, the hills were, well, not a breeze but a lot easier than they had been. I think it was because none of the hills were as steep as some of the ones that we have been doing lately. The steepest was probably the first one I hit, as that was the one I breathed the hardest onm but I made it through no problem. In fact, I didn't stop to rest on any of the hills, though I did stop for other things, such as getting sunscreen in my eye and it watering so bad I needed to stop and take care of it, putting on my jacket before the big downhill, and the standard potty stops. The loop went by so quickly that I still had time to pick up another 15 miles by going up the trail to Wilmot Gateway Park and back. It was nice that the weather cooperated, and it was cloudy and cool for most of the ride.
Couple of annoyances though. On the trail, I got forced into the grass once as two guys headed downhill sped out of their lane into mine, and they were coming down a blind corner. It's just a hiccup of an underpass, so I bumped along and climbed up on the other side, getting back on the trail again. I was very proud of myself for not going down, but I was really just tempting fate. When I left the trail at the end of my ride, there's a very tight turn as there's a lot of construction work being done. Well, I must have hit a tree root or something, as I could feel myself starting to tip, and I could not get my foot out of my peddal. I went down on the grass with an 'oh crap', but no scrapes or even minor injuries; a couple of bruises, and a whole bunch of oil from my chain all over my legs, being the worst of it. But when I got on my bike to ride to where Lar was picking me up, I realized that the chain had come off the crankset, so I had to disassemble everything and put it back together. I don't know if the chain coming off led to the crash or if the crash somehow derailed the chain, but I think I may need to take a look at it later and see if it needs work.
