Dear Yuletide Writer

Hi! I am so glad you found your way here. I cribbed this from prior years, but if you are stuck, I hope this letter gives you some ideas for things you can write.  If you already have an idea for one of the characters I asked for, go for it.  I want you to have fun writing and not to stress it – I want you to enjoy yourself.

Here's what I wrote in my original request with a couple of additional thoughts:

The Good Place (TV)  - Eleanor Shellstrop  - Tahani Al-Jamil

We know in season two that there was at least one mis-start that had Tahani and Eleanor as soulmates, and I would love to see how that played out.  Or go the enemies-to-friends route ("Mean Giraffe!") where they fall for each other after being enemies.

The "second chances" trope is one of my absolute favorites, and that is already built into the series premise, so anything you do that keeps the tone of the show will be golden!

p.s. - feel free to add any of the canon characters you want. I asked for Eleanor and Tahani as I want their relationship front and center, but Jason, Janet, Chidi, and Michael are welcome to play a part.

This is absolutely a femslash place for me, but you could also do some really silly stuff with them in the friendship arena if you want. I'm good with everything from whipped cream battles to dance offs, or strange caverns and tidal pools as they explore whatever version of the world they happen to be in.

Wonder Woman (2017)  - Etta Candy (Wonder Woman 2017)

I want to see Etta have an adventure! I'd love to see her being a competent super-spy or a have a relaxing, sexual adventure with Diana or another Amazon on the island. Pretty much any way you want to go with this, as long is Etta has a good time, I'll love it.

Etta's draw for me is that she's an unconventional beauty, and while she's extremely competent, she doesn't seem to get the credit she deserves as she is always working in the background.  I want someone to see her for the fabulous person she is, and if she gets a medal and/or love out of it, all the better.

Alpha and Omega - Patricia Briggs  - Asil (Alpha & Omega) -  Bran Cornick (Alpha and Omega)

I really love Asil, and think his friendship with Bran is exciting. I would love to see something about one of their earlier encounters, maybe a bit about why he trusts Bran so much and why Bran trusts him.  I think it would also be fun to put them in modern day hijinx, as Asil is being pulled out of his focus on the past to embrace the modern world.  I think Bran would be both pleased and startled by things that Asil adapts, maybe something like going to a rose show to see some modern varieties.

Other ideas:
I’m a character-driven, relationship focused story fan, so if you stick with that – from a small friendship story to epic romance – I'll enjoy it.  I love all types of intimacy from gen to explicit erotica; my favorite kink is D/s, and I also like hurt/comfort, just not of the illness kind.

I love worldbuilding, and all of the fandoms I’ve asked for involve rich worlds to explore.  Feel free to bring in other characters if you want, including original characters; my selected characters should be the focus, but there are a lot of other people in the universe too.

Tropes I love: First times, teasing, banter, dark pasts, found families, self-realization, wistful regret, old hurts, second chances, dreams, adventure, ass kicking, angst, exotic settings, outsider POV, wacky situations, steampunk, horror, other worlds, whumpage, hurt/comfort, themes about friendship, trust and love.  I'd also prefer a happy ending.

I do have some dislikes: heavy illness (cancer, AIDS, etc), pregnancy, public humiliation/embarrassment, death and permanent disability.  I'm not keen on first person POV or all dialog stories, though I am fine with a story narrated by an original character, animal companion, or inanimate object.

Enjoy writing your story and I'm sure I'll love reading it. All of the details are optional, and I’m happy to leave specifics up to you. Like I said, I love these characters and I'll love whatever you choose to write in any of these fandoms. I'm really looking forward to it!

Yuletide Reveal

I feel a bit like Liam Neeson's character in Taken, here:
If you are looking for a typical yuletide story, I can tell you that I don't have patience to write one, but what I do have is a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career in fandom. Skills that make me a nightmare for some types of readers.

Sorry, just had to riff on that.  For yuletide, I wrote Angel/Demon Incest Porn with D/s powerplay overtones, lots of banter, and a wrapper of wingfic. The story was never going to be to everyone's taste, but for those that like that sort of thing, this story may be a thing that you like.

Pilgrimage (2921 words) by Rachael Sabotini

Summary:

When Lucifer had announced that he was paying a visit to Amenadiel, Maze had rolled her eyes at him. "Good luck with that," she'd muttered, giving him a little wave. "That asshole hasn't called me since he moved."

For myself, I received a wonderful story for Eliot in the Magicians. I feel terrible that I became ill right after Christmas, so I was not able to post about it earlier, but it's a lovely story of Eliot and Margo's first meeting.

quick update

MIL was able to feed herself and walk using a walker!  Woo-hoo!  That's a lot of progress from where she was, so rehab will be helpful.

on the story side, I cut about 2K words from the story, and now I feel like it makes sense.  I need to write the rest of it, but it feels more doable now.  Could be it's must a better day.

It's been a day

I spent the day at madigan army medical center as my mother in law had a stroke last night.  Her right side is affected, but she can still talk, which is great.  She was able to move her hand some today (open and close it, make a fist, that type of thing) which is fantastic as she wasn't able to do that last night.  She's having a tough time -- she's had back pain for years, and now she can't use her right arm to help her lever herself into comfortable positions, plus she can't do much with her right leg.  There will be more tests tomorrow as they evaluate the near term recovery plan, and what the prognosis looks like. We know there will be some time at a rehab facility, and we'll just take it one day at a time after that.  I'm not sure she's going to be able to live alone anymore.

Aging, man.  It can really suck.

I'm forever behind on my yuletide story, and seriously considering defaulting.  This would be my first time, and while some of it is I just can't get myself to sit in the chair and do the work, I'm also distracted by crazy stuff happening in life: the layoff, the election, dad's recalled pacemaker, and now this.  It's really a lot, you know?  I need a draft by default day for me to feel comfortable continuing, so that's the goal for the week.  We'll see what happens.

I really hope everyone else had a much better day.

Dear Yuletide Author

Dear Yuletide Author,

Hi! Sorry to be late putting this up, and I am so glad you found your way here. If you are looking for other ideas, I’m a character-driven, relationship focused story fan, so if you stick with that – from a small friendship story to epic romance – I will love it. I love all types of intimacy from gen to explicit erotica; my favorite kink is D/s, and I also like hurt/comfort, just not of the illness kind.

I love worldbuilding, and all of the fandoms I’ve asked for involve rich worlds to explore.  You can also build yourself a new one with alternate histories and timelines, or turn it all into a steampunk version of the original universe! Feel free to bring in other characters if you want, including original characters; my selected characters should be the focus, but there are a lot of other people in the universe too.

Tropes I love: First times, teasing, banter, dark pasts, found families, self-realization, wistful regret, pining, old hurts, second chances, dreams, adventure, ass kicking, angst, exotic settings, outsider POV, wacky undercover situations, steampunk, horror, other worlds, whumpage, hurt/comfort, themes about friendship, trust and love.  I'd also prefer a happy ending.

Here's what I wrote in my original request with a couple of additional thoughts

Kate Daniels - Ilona Andrews - Julie

I'm really interested in exploring Julie's life and her relationships - not just the one with Derek or Kate, but other shapeshifters like Dali or her training with the shade of Kate's aunt. I'm caught up on the latest book, so anything that happens as an outgrowth of Kate's war with her father would be cool too. I love the universe and the character and would love to see Julie's life explored.

Case fic, Day-in-the-life, five things about Julie - all good.

The Magicians (TV) - Eliot

I was pretty shattered by what happened to everyone at the end of the first series, and the fact that Eliot is tied down to a woman he never chose and a land he had no interest in is horrific to me.  I'd like something a little happier, either s pre or post-series Eliot is a possibility, or something with Eliot and Margo at any time you like.  I love their relationship and would like to see more of it. The two of them picking up a third or fourth would be awesome.

Ghostbusters (2016) - Holtzman

I have a mad crush on Holtz and just like the other character-focused requests this year, I want to see more about her.  Her background is a mystery, and I'd like to see that explored.  I'd also like to see one of the other Ghostbusters attempt to matchmake her, only to find out she herself is the match.  I'd love a little guns 'n romance story.

Enjoy writing your story and I'm sure I'll love reading it. All of the details are optional, and I’m happy to leave specifics up to you. Like I said, I love these characters and I'll love whatever you choose to write in any of these fandoms. I'm really looking forward to it!

Yuletide Reveal #2 - My Pinch Hit

Gravity is a Harsh Mistress (2996 words) by Rachael Sabotini

Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Martian (2015), The Martian - Andy Weir
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Chris Beck/Beth Johanssen/Mark Watney
Characters: Beth Johanssen, Chris Beck, Mark Watney
Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Bathing/Washing, Team as Family
Summary: Mark didn't come away from Mars completely unscathed.

When I saw the pinch hit come through for H/c the Martian - with one request per the book and one per the movie -- I jumped at it. Because...H/C! Science Fiction! Potential Threesome! So totally in my wheelhouse, I had to jump at it.

Of course, once I got it, I had a rush of anxiety over writing. There was the little matter of my writing speed being glacier-like, and having less than a week to write it in -- given that I would be out of town on deadline weekend. It was at that point that I recognized the requester, and started banging my head on the desk for not really looking at that first.

So I grabbed a couple of people off the yuletide beta readers list -- alina and Celeste -- just to make sure I was writing something intelligible. Then I asked Gwyn to beta it, as I knew she could whip the story into shape, and find all the missing emotional holes that I initially forget. I worked on it right up until deadline, and am pretty proud of how it turned out.

Dira liked it, and I felt good about my writing process. It was a good Yuletide for me.

Yuletide Reveal #1

To Amy Santiago, Thanks for Everything. Love, Hermione Granger. (3050 words) by Rachael Sabotini
For strix_alba
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Brooklyn Nine-Nine (TV), Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Movies)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jake Peralta/Amy Santiago
Characters: Amy Santiago, Jake Peralta, Gina Linetti, Rosa Diaz, Charles Boyle, Ray Holt, Madeline Wuntch
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Fusion, Ensemble Cast, Magical Affairs, Misses Clause Challenge, Comedy
Summary:

Amy Santiago is under investigation by Magical Affairs.

I wrote crackfic for yuletide! This was so much fun. Strix alba requested a Harry Potter/B99 crossover, 'or as much as you can do for yuletide', and that was my cue to make this a walk on the silly side. I'd also been reading some of the spoilers for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, so I had some fresh ideas of how the magical culture might be different in America. I ran with it all, and tried to frame up the B99 crew as if they had magical powers. It's short - just long enough to get in, do the joke, and move on. :)

At Long Last, Dear Yuletide Author!

Dear Yuletide Author,

Hi! I am so glad you found your way here. I cribbed this from former years, but if you are stuck, I hope this letter gives you some ideas for things you can write. If you have an idea for an AU or off-the-wall scenario or future fic that you are dying to see with the characters I asked for, go for it. I want you to have fun writing and not to stress it – I want you to enjoy yourself.

I’m a character-driven, relationship focused story fan, so if you stick with that – from a small friendship story to epic romance – I will love it. I love all types of intimacy from gen to explicit erotica; my favorite kink is D/s, and I also like hurt/comfort, just not of the illness kind.

I love worldbuilding, and all of the fandoms I’ve asked for involve rich worlds to explore. You can also build yourself a new one with alternate histories and timelines, or make them all members of the same band. Feel free to bring in other characters if you want, including original characters; my selected characters should be the focus, but that doesn’t mean they are all alone in the world.

Tropes I love: First times, teasing, banter, dark pasts, found families, self-realization, wistful regret, pining, old hurts, second chances, dreams, adventure, ass kicking, angst, exotic settings, outsider POV, wacky undercover situations, steampunk, horror, other worlds, whumpage, hurt/comfort, themes about friendship, trust and love. I'd also prefer a happy ending.

I’ll try to give you a little more background on what I like in my chosen fandoms.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries : Phryne is my girl. I love her looks, her attitude and her innate desire to help others. Her relationship with Jack is one of my favorite things about the show as 'banter! banter! banter!' could be one of my favorite tag lines. Plus with both of them it's a 'second chance' story for me. Things that would work could include a dare that's a date, or something that involves some ass-kicking. Prefer for Jack to be the one hurt in a hurt/comfort scenario, if you go that route.

I'm happy to have any of the other characters in the story, but I really want it to focus on Phryne and Jack. I think they have serious chemistry, and I love the way she handles him.

Killjoys (TV) : I think Dutch is fantastic, and I want to know more about her. I'm also very interested in their relationship, whether you want to go with 'found families' or a more intimate act. Their universe is worth exploring, and I'm happy to see where you take them.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015) : I admit that this one really hit my 'everything old is new again' vibe. The old version and the new are someone intertwined in my head, so this isn't a canon-based fandom for me, and I'd love to see this taken in a more SF bent. You could also do a Steampunk-ish AU with this, which could be really fascinating. Any tack you want to take is fine by me, but I would like to have this slashed.

Books of the Raksura - Martha Wells : I love the universe, I love the characters, and I'd love to see Shade visit some with Jade and Moon. Maybe a visit somehow caused by the birth of Moon and Jade's clutch?

Enjoy writing your story and I'm sure I'll love reading it. All of the details are optional, and I’m happy to leave specifics up to you. Like I said, I love these characters and I'll love whatever you choose to write in any of these fandoms. I'm really looking forward to it!

Down to the wire

I have one more thing I think I need to fix, and then yuletide will be done.  As usual, I am insecure and will find someone to do a final proofing pass, but Gwyn has already given me great comments on the structure and characterization. I think the story is a lot stronger now than it was when she saw it.  If I weren't so exhausted, I would finish that one thing tonight, but as it is, It will need to wait until tomorrow.  I still have three days left.

In other news, we are having Christmas-y holiday stuff at work.  It was the cookie competition today, and I was so concerned about not enough people submitting stuff that I made eggnog sugar cookies from a mix last night, not putting much effort into it at all.

So, yeah, you guessed it. I won.

Candy shopping complete!

I love the candy, book, and beverage swaps for the yuletide community.  I have a lot of fun shopping for treats, and this year, I have finished my candy swap shopping early.  I go to this funky little drugstore near me, which stocks a lot of local and weird candies, and it's always fun to pick through what's there and select a set of fun, local candies.  Of course, I have no idea what my recipient might want as sign ups aren't even finished yet, but I figure anything left over can be added to a gift box for my son in college.  I'm sure that either he or his housemates will enjoy them.

So yes!  Sign up.  It's a ton of fun to think about, shop for, or bake for.  Like I said, I really enjoy it.

Also, note to self: the time has come to remove some of the SGA icons on this account and add something from my more recent fandoms.

I’ll try to give you a little more background on what I like in my chosen fandoms.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
I love the feel of the series, and the quirky, fun and self-confident women of the show. I'm not looking for a romantic relationship between all the characters I selected, however if you wanted to write something like a relationship between Dot and Phryne from Jane's perspective, I would really excited by that. Or the three of them having their own adventure -- possibility of a Call of Cthulhu nature -- would be lovely as well.

Books of the Raksura - Martha Wells
Moon, Jade and Chime - I love the universe, I love the characters, I love the depth and complexity of the Raksura culture...just anything that you wanted to write with the three of them would be great. I'd like to see a balance between all the characters in whatever you choose to do, but anything would make me happy.

Archer (Cartoon)
Pam! Oh you sexually confident minx you. I know Pam's a bit crazy and a little disgusting, but I love her outrageous nature, her take-on-anything attitude, and her lack of boundaries (especially for someone in HR). Her lust for life and her sexual appetite -- not to mention her lack of ability to be humiliated -- are a hoot. If you wanted to write sex for Christmas, Pam is my go-to gal.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013)
I thought this was a lot of fun, and I would love to see more of the characters. I really did want to know what happens next with all the big, bombastic weapons, the slinky outfits, the silly steampunk-y alternate explanations for how things work -- it's all there. If you want to go over the top, well, this is the place.

October Daye Series - Seanan McGuire
May and Jazz don't get  a lot of focus in the novels, and I want to see more of their daily lives. If Pam is sex, and Hansel and Gretel are crack, then May and Jazz are my cozy couple. I don't have a lot of need for big adventures for them; I'd be happy to just have them run into trouble while shopping downtown, or just have difficulty putting some Ikea furniture together. I'm really interested in what Jazz's life is like as a raven maid and how she balances that with her life with May. I'd be interested in seeing her perspective on Toby and Tybalt as well.

Enjoy writing your story and I'm sure I'll love reading it. All of the details are optional, and I’m happy to leave specifics up to you. Like I said, I love these characters and I'll love whatever you choose to write in any of these fandoms. I'm really looking forward to it!

Yuletide and SGA Santa Reveal

Hey, I am posting a holiday reveal post in January! Go me, that is way better than I have been doing the last few years.

My Yuletide story was Life Lessons for unveiled
Fandom: Agents of Shield

Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply

Wow, did I luck out with this one! unveiled simply asked for Melinda May being awesome, so I thought I would try for something that was smaller and more scaled back emotionally, yet showed her connection with the people around her. Tough, very tough, and a little random. But though some great feedback from Nicole and Movies_Michelle, I was able to refine the story so it thematically says what I wanted it to say -- that Melinda May is tough and awesome, yes, but she craves people as much as plants need water and light. (More or less) Anyway, it was a blast, and I got a good response on it, so I was really happy with this year's draw.

I also did a short (300 word-ish) Yuletide Madness story for jessikast: Sunday Morning
Fandom: October Daye Series - Seanan McGuire
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply

For the past few years, I've drawn femslash fandoms and so when I saw jessikast's request on the pinch hit list for a story where one of the options for point of view was May, I jumped on it. I didn't have a full story, just an image of May and her raven maiden girlfriend on a lazy sunday morning, so that's what I wrote. I love the couple and would really love to explore their relationship and the mythology of the raven maidens sometime, but that wasn't going to happen with yuletide deadlines. So the piece is what it is -- I got my femslash story in, and jessikast had one more treat in her stocking come Christmas morning -- so all was good with the world.

My last story reveal is for the one I did for SGA Santa: Lava Hotel for mific

It's a John/Rodney story, and it's the one that nearly killed me to write. I know, I know, it's barely over minimun, but the issue was that mific specifically requested no Hurt/Comfort, and ... well, you know me. Saying 'no hurt/comfort' was like saying 'don't think of elephants'.
Every single story start turned to H/c at some point in time, and I got about 5K words written on one before realizing I'd gone off-course and cutting back on it, only to realize -- after another thousand words or so -- that I was off course yet AGAIN! Arrg. So frustrating. So I scrapped it all and restarted, determined to write something fun and light, and this was the result. Personally, I think it's adorable -- well, the characters are adorable, particularly John -- and it made me happy to see them have some fun together after the hell that I had been putting them through. I think it's a much better gift than the others I'd started, so go me for finding that middle ground.

So there you go, that's my stories for the year. I had a blast and hope I can get a little more writing done this year.

A Yuletide Story for Me!

As many of you know, I went to the pinch hit list this year, so my lovely author got only a few days to write my story.  I really enjoyed what she did in The Sweet Arcade Life, and think she did a great job in a very short span of time.  It is a lovely little story exploring the impact of downloadable content for Sugar Rush on the friendship between Wreck-it Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz. I love the idea a lot, and the way she compares Wreck-It Ralph's unchanging world with Vanellope's weekly updated one has some of the same philosophical underpinnings of the original movie while still maintaining its whimsy.

Now, as far as the guessing game goes, I wrote two stories this year, my regular assignment and one non-drabble yuletide madness treat.  As usual, both are new fandoms for me, both have female protagonists, and both have a relationship bent.

You rock for taking this on.  I know you only have a couple of days, so go you for stepping up to write in one of my uber-tiny fandoms.  Here's the link for my letter this year, but don't stress it:

http://wickedwords.dreamwidth.org/50694.html

Here's the much shortened version - plot is not as important as character, domestic scenes are cool,  I like a little description over white rooms, and I love whimsy.

See you in five days, and thanks again for taking this on.

Hi!  I am so glad you found your way here. I hope this letter gives you some ideas of what types of things I like and don’t like in general, and know that while I stuck with canon-based ideas in my submission suggestions, those are all definitely optional.  If you have an idea for an AU or off-the-wall scenario or future fic that you are dying to see with the characters I asked for, go for it.  I want you to have fun writing and not to stress it – I want you to enjoy yourself.

I’m a character-driven, relationship focused story fan, so if you stick with that – from a small friendship story to epic slash romance – I will love it. I love all types of intimacy from gen to explicit erotica; my favorite kink is D/s, and I also like hurt/comfort.

Unless the apocalypse happened.  In which case, heck yeah!  I’d love to read that story. As you can see from my selections this year, I’m a big urban fanstasy fan,  so you get to play with both magic and science as much as you want.

Tropes I love: First times, teasing, banter, dark pasts, found families, self-realization, wistful regret, pining, old hurts, second chances, dreams, romance without schmoop, adventure, ass kicking, angst, exotic settings, outsider POV, wacky undercover situations, steampunk, horror, other worlds, whumpage, hurt/comfort, themes about trust and love.

I do have some dislikes: heavy illness (cancer, AIDS, etc), pregnancy, public humiliation/embarrassment, death and permanent disability. Not that I think you'd write that for yuletide, but I wanted to get it out there anyway. I'm not keen on first person POV or all dialog stories, though I am fine with a story narrated by an original character, animal companion, or inanimate object.

I’ll try to give you a little more background on what I like in my chosen fandoms

My Yuletide reveal is a little tricky, as I am revealing what I wrote in 2011 as well as 2012.

For Yuletide 2012 I wrote:

Title: Proper Names
Pairing: Marceline/Princess Bubblegum
Fandom: Adventure Time
Rating: Teen
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: In which Marceline loses her voice and Bubblegum finds it.

King Touchy, Hannah Banana, and elynross beta'd for me, and the story is better for their efforts. This story continues my tradition of sweet femslash for yuletide. Go me, for my several years of consistency!

For Yuletide 2011 I wrote:

Title: Warren and Kyle
Fandom: Mercy Thompson Series - Patricia Briggs
Rating: Teen
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: Big patterns are woven out of tiny threads.

Last year's story wasn't sweet femslash -- it was sweet gay werewolves! Yes, before you were all on your teen wolf kick, I was writing backstory for a canonically gay cowboy werewolf and his partner. Kyle and Warren may be supporting characters, but they rock the Mercy Thompson series, I'm just sayin'.
