I signed up for SGA Secret Santa this year, and got very cute foodie AU from elderwitty & squidgie: My Dinner with Rodney. I loved the author's story about how they came to write it almost as much as I liked the story itself, and the whole thing made me smile. I love it.

As for what I wrote, I finished An Earthly Harvest Festival for clopoleLis. It's a slice of life story wherein our intrepid adventurers are forced to attend a very dull holiday party on Earth. I got a real kick out of writing it.

I am very excited at seeing your story, but my family has a big Christmas eve celebration and a low key Christmas day. I will be reading it as soon as I can.

Finally got the last 13 stories from my website imported to A03. I will try to get the all tagged and moved from draft to story by the end of Jan. And once that's done, that will it for the website. I'm not sure how long we have left on what we have paid, but that's the last time we'll renew. It'll be good to get it all shifted over at the beginning of next year.

Today's reorg only eliminated two and four open headcount. I ended up coordinating two teams, both newish to me. My old team got folded into an existing team, and I get to do some of that coordination work as well. So for me, not terrible, just a whole lot of work.

Husband is safe too. New manager (again), and he gets to work with a new analyst...Me. Now that is gonna be weird.

Dear Yuletide Author,

Hi! I am so glad you found your way here. I cribbed this from former years, but if you are stuck, I hope this letter gives you some ideas for things you can write. If you have an idea for an AU or off-the-wall scenario or future fic that you are dying to see with the characters I asked for, go for it. I want you to have fun writing and not to stress it – I want you to enjoy yourself.

I’m a character-driven, relationship focused story fan, so if you stick with that – from a small friendship story to epic romance – I will love it. I love all types of intimacy from gen to explicit erotica; my favorite kink is D/s, and I also like hurt/comfort, just not of the illness kind.

I love worldbuilding, and all of the fandoms I’ve asked for involve rich worlds to explore. You can also build yourself a new one with alternate histories and timelines, or make them all members of the same band. Feel free to bring in other characters if you want, including original characters; my selected characters should be the focus, but that doesn’t mean they are all alone in the world.

Tropes I love: First times, teasing, banter, dark pasts, found families, self-realization, wistful regret, pining, old hurts, second chances, dreams, adventure, ass kicking, angst, exotic settings, outsider POV, wacky undercover situations, steampunk, horror, other worlds, whumpage, hurt/comfort, themes about friendship, trust and love. I'd also prefer a happy ending.

I do have some dislikes: heavy illness (cancer, AIDS, etc), pregnancy, public humiliation/embarrassment, death and permanent disability. I'm not keen on first person POV or all dialog stories, though I am fine with a story narrated by an original character, animal companion, or inanimate object.

I’ll try to give you a little more background on what I like in my chosen fandoms.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries : Phryne is my girl. I love her looks, her attitude and her innate desire to help others. Her relationship with Jack is one of my favorite things about the show as 'banter! banter! banter!' could be one of my favorite tag lines. Plus with both of them it's a 'second chance' story for me. Things that would work could include a dare that's a date, or something that involves some ass-kicking. Prefer for Jack to be the one hurt in a hurt/comfort scenario, if you go that route.

I'm happy to have any of the other characters in the story, but I really want it to focus on Phryne and Jack. I think they have serious chemistry, and I love the way she handles him.

Killjoys (TV) : I think Dutch is fantastic, and I want to know more about her. I'm also very interested in their relationship, whether you want to go with 'found families' or a more intimate act. Their universe is worth exploring, and I'm happy to see where you take them.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015) : I admit that this one really hit my 'everything old is new again' vibe. The old version and the new are someone intertwined in my head, so this isn't a canon-based fandom for me, and I'd love to see this taken in a more SF bent. You could also do a Steampunk-ish AU with this, which could be really fascinating. Any tack you want to take is fine by me, but I would like to have this slashed.

Books of the Raksura - Martha Wells : I love the universe, I love the characters, and I'd love to see Shade visit some with Jade and Moon. Maybe a visit somehow caused by the birth of Moon and Jade's clutch?

Enjoy writing your story and I'm sure I'll love reading it. All of the details are optional, and I’m happy to leave specifics up to you. Like I said, I love these characters and I'll love whatever you choose to write in any of these fandoms. I'm really looking forward to it!

I think I am halfway through loading the Stargate Atlantis stuff, and believe I may have single handedly doubled the existence of Lorne/Parrish FanFiction. Next up will be the Sheppard/McKay stuff, and I am hoping to get through most of it by the end of the year. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

And if I get this done, then next year, it's vids.

I am going to be a panelist this year for the fandom track at Norwescon. For the Fine Art of Fan Ficiton, we are going to do a few readings. I have a couple of things in mind, but I still haven't actually done the work to put a script together. Have to get to that tonight.

can I remember how to use this thing... )

Two very stressful things this past week: first, the layoffs that everyone knew were coming finally arrived, and both my husband and I survived. So yay! Still employed. How awesome.

Second, I had my five year post-treatment appointment with the oncologist yesterday, and for once there was absolutely no problem with my bloodwork or anything else. Everything looked great, and when I was asked if I wanted to keep seeing her for maintenance appointments, I said: "No."

So that's it! Done. Done. Done. Checked out and gone home, and hopefully I will never see her cute little elfin face again. The past few weeks I have been going crazy with this stuff, and now I am finally through it. W00t!

I have migrated my HL stories from my personal website to A03 at last:

I am still missing one story written by many people -- suze, lum, bone, maybe Zen and Nancy, maybe others -- but I no longer have a copy of it myself and will have to pull it from the internet archive.

So with that, I am down to just my SGA stories, and I want to get those done this year. Afterwards, it'll all be about moving the vid site to creative commons, and setting those up in A03 too.

Twenty or so years worth of fan works. It's still a lot of stuff to do.

I love this youtube series with it's in-depth analysis of camera work. He took a look at Jackie Chan and how to do Action Comedy about a month ago, and I found it really fascinating.

I recommend all of the videos he's produced, particularly if you are interested in vids. It gives you a lot of options that you may not have thought about for vidding before.

Title: The Cougar Way
For AngeNoir

Fandom: The Losers (2010)
Pairing: Carlos "Cougar" Alvarez/Jake Jensen
Summary: In which Cougar is not a vampire, and things do not go to hell.

Look!  I wrote a story last year!  And it was slash and everything.  I'm pretty happy with it as it is something that I would like to get.  AngeNoir's list of fandoms matched my reading list for the past couple of years, with all of my favorite urban fantasy/paranormal romance universes in her request.  Her kinks also aligned strongly with mine, so I thought 'wow, this will be like writing for myself, and I'm not sure I can do that...'  The story did shrink and move fandoms as the deadline approached, as I always think about more than I can write. :)  I did try to keep some of the urban fantasy/paranormal romance vibe without actually including anything supernatural in it, and I only had time for a very short sex scene. Still and all, I like how it turned out, and that's not something i say all that often.  I pretty much hate my writing when I get done.

Many thanks to Gwyn, who made the story a lot better.    A ton of thanks for that.  Thanks as well to Movies_Michelle,  who gave me a final proofing pass as I made it just in time to the deadline.  You both rock.

We start our celebration tonight, with a big chili-fest with friends.  Tonight's wine is Acronym as I could not resist the label.  We'll follow dinner up with a game or two as a group, and then once everyone has gone, I will finally be able to read my yuletide story.

I mean, I love my friends, but....YULETIDE!!!

I successfully outran the bears, and the story is posted.  Yay!
wickedwords: (yuletide stockings)
I have one more thing I think I need to fix, and then yuletide will be done.  As usual, I am insecure and will find someone to do a final proofing pass, but Gwyn has already given me great comments on the structure and characterization. I think the story is a lot stronger now than it was when she saw it.  If I weren't so exhausted, I would finish that one thing tonight, but as it is, It will need to wait until tomorrow.  I still have three days left.

In other news, we are having Christmas-y holiday stuff at work.  It was the cookie competition today, and I was so concerned about not enough people submitting stuff that I made eggnog sugar cookies from a mix last night, not putting much effort into it at all.

So, yeah, you guessed it. I won.

Don't tell anyone, okay?

Bears. Bears. Bears.  All the time.  Bears.

We have 4 cats right now, which is really wacky.  Our friend Mitzi died, and no one in her family could care for her two kitties, so we took them in.  It's been over a month now, and there is no real violence between them -- but it's really weird to have so many cats.

Sweetie -- who I swear suffers from PTSD -- is the oldest, at around 5-6 years. She's a long hair burmese queen that Mitzi adopted from a shelter.  We believe that she had been used as a breeder, and she was abandonded after a few litters as she throws up a lot.  She weighs around 8 lbs, and really is a sweetheart when she's not anxious.

Lilly is the next oldest, around 4 years - grey tabby and white, long hair, lovely and territorial.  She was FIV+ so she was kept isolated from the rest of the household for several months, and when we took her in, we kept her in a separate room until her blood test came back clean.  She's a doll, but can get overly excited, and she's very much a loner.  I'm not sure she really sees other cats as her same species.

Jasper is "Sweetie's Kitten".  She was alone a lot after Mitzi adopted her, which made her anxiety worse.  Mitzi thought that having another cat would help her, and so she picked up a male red tabby kitten as male/female cat combos are easier to integrate.  Sweetie and Jasper really did have this 'oh, my lost baby is found!' thing going on for quite a while.  He is a big ol' two or three year old 18 lb monster now, and he climbs up on the counters and the top of the refrigerator. In 20 years, none of my cats has ever climbed Mt Fridge, but that's where Jasper likes to lay.

Jack is the youngest, born in April of this year. He's a tabby the color of toasted coconut, and loves to hang out with us, licking and cuddling and sitting in our laps. He had a bad run with an upper respiratory infection, and while his sneezing is normal now, one of his eyes still gets watery occasionally and needs antibiotics.   Jasper is his bestest buddy, and the two constantly play and get into trouble.  Lilly and Jack also hang out some, and she lets him lick her head.  He ignores Sweetie, who mostly stays upstairs in a couple of rooms, and she lets him swagger  into her domain with only the occasional hiss.  So I think -- fingers crossed -- this might all work out.

And I think I am now, officially, a crazy cat lady.

I love the candy, book, and beverage swaps for the yuletide community.  I have a lot of fun shopping for treats, and this year, I have finished my candy swap shopping early.  I go to this funky little drugstore near me, which stocks a lot of local and weird candies, and it's always fun to pick through what's there and select a set of fun, local candies.  Of course, I have no idea what my recipient might want as sign ups aren't even finished yet, but I figure anything left over can be added to a gift box for my son in college.  I'm sure that either he or his housemates will enjoy them.

So yes!  Sign up.  It's a ton of fun to think about, shop for, or bake for.  Like I said, I really enjoy it.

Also, note to self: the time has come to remove some of the SGA icons on this account and add something from my more recent fandoms.
