Oh no! Best of wishes to your m-i-l for a swift recovery.

I will say this--when my uncle had a stroke about 18 months ago, he really was able to make up a lot of the ground. He had what sounds like a comparable experience with your m-i-l: his speech wasn't greatly affected, but one of his hands was, and his leg. The improvement during the time at the rehab facility was really remarkable--I visited him a few times there, and each time there was a noticeable difference. He didn't quite get full functionality of the leg back--he still uses a cane when he's tired especially--but you would never know, if you just met him now, that he'd had a stroke.
