I am going to be a panelist this year for the fandom track at Norwescon. For the Fine Art of Fan Ficiton, we are going to do a few readings. I have a couple of things in mind, but I still haven't actually done the work to put a script together. Have to get to that tonight.

Thursday 4/2
Reclaiming & Recreating Popular Culture
Cascade 7&8
9:00PM-10:00PM
The writing, and reading, of fanfiction goes beyond simply individuals adoring a show or a book and wanting to play in that universe. The creation of fanfiction is the audiences of the world reclaiming control over the characters and stories that they love and recreating popular culture as they want to experience it, not as companies and corporations decide for us. Discover how fanfiction isn’t just people obsessing about the same thing over and over again, but about exploring new ideas, new facets, and aspects of characters and worlds that the popular media would never dream of exploring.

Friday 4/3
Fan Fiction vs Original Fiction
Cascade 5
4:00PM-5:00PM
Many well known and respected authors started off as fanfiction authors. Some authors have even gone as far as to remove the serial numbers, as it were, from their fan fiction and release it as original fiction, or used parts of it in their novels. But are there skills that you need to write original fiction that you don’t learn through writing fan fiction? What can you learn from fan fiction and fannish writing communities that is important and useful for writing in general?
Diana Copland (M), Laura Anne Gilman, Rosa Acicularis, Rachael Sabotini

The Fine Art of Fanfiction
Cascade 5
7:00PM-8:00PM
Have you heard about fanfic but only in the worst ways? Is your idea of fanfic that it’s a bunch of drivel, written by talentless hacks? This panel is here to prove a point – that like all forms of creative endeavors, be they novels, movies, or television shows, there is The Bad and The Ugly, but there is also The Good. Our panelists will read short excerpts from some of their favorite fanfic stories, each passage selected to represent The Good: the talent, the skill, and the artistry to be found in fanfiction.

Saturday 4/4
Creating Crossovers
Cascade 5
11:00AM-Noon
Fanfiction generally is the exploration of a group of characters from a TV series, a movie series, or a series of novels… until someone decides to add a second (and sometimes even a third or fourth) world setting and/or characters. Why do authors want to mix up their fandoms and universes? Why does it work sometimes and not work other times? We’ll discuss the specific tradition of Crossover stories, the worlds that tend to be crossed, and what happens when the Avengers go to Hogwarts.
Berlynn Wohl (M), thatworldinverted, Rachael Sabotini, Tartan

Tropes & Terms
Cascade 5
3:00PM-4:00PM
The history of fanfiction is a long and involved one and as such, the community has developed their own lexicon of catch-phrases, terms, and identifiers. If you are a newbie fanfic reader, we will help you traverse through such obscure tropes and terms, as OTP, OT3, H/C, MPreg, AU, Whump, OC, Mary Sue, WIP, Drabble, Gen, PWP, RPF, UST and many more!

Facts & Fictions of Cancer
Cascade 3&4
4:00PM-5:00PM
There are many different types of cancer, each with its own cause and treatment. Our experts will draw on their knowledge and personal experiences to present the facts and counter the fictions of cancer.
Janet Freeman-Daily (M), Rachael Sabotini, Jessica Hebert, Jim Kling, Kurt Cagle, Dr. Misty Marshall

Sunday 4/5
Preservation of Fanfiction & Fan History
Cascade 2
1:00PM-2:00PM
While there are groups such as AO3 who are currently devoted to creating a place in which fanfiction can be collected, searched, and archived, there are many other, lesser known groups who make it their job to find, collect, and preserve fan history, art, and fiction. Come learn about these resources, how you can support them, what you can find at them, and how to contribute to the preservation of fan works.
